FIRE CIDER

By Monisha Dajee

FIRE CIDER

To keep our immune system strong this year, we decided to make a batch of Fire Cider.

Fire Cider is an old remedy which uses the potent power of Apple Cider Vinegar infused with superfoods, to create a tonic that’s spicy, pungent and sweet. Fire Cider is a renowned folk remedy, said to combat flu and colds, aid digestion and boost the immune system. This punchy concoction is a longtime favourite within the herbal community and was originally coined by the herbalist Rosemary Gladstar in the late 1970’s.

RECIPE

We used:

  • Fresh Turmeric (a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant)
  • Fresh ginger (a warming ingredient with antiviral properties and aids digestion)
  • 8 garlic cloves – chopped and whole (antiviral and antimicrobial properties)
  • 1 fresh lemon cut into wedges (source of vitamin C and aids digestion)
  • 1 grapefruit, cut into wedges (beneficial for your immune system)
  • Dried or fresh chillis (warming ingredient that supports circulation)
  • 1 cup of raw honey (locally produced from our own hives to beat allergies, soothes inflamed tissues and organs)
  • 5 sprigs of thyme (a natural cough remedy, packed with vitamin C and is also a good source of vitamin A)
  • A few sprigs of rosemary (High in antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory compounds)
  • Half and onion (anti-inflammatory)
  • A few cloves (High in antioxidants)
  • 1 tablespoon of Peppercorns (High in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (Loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties)
  • 2-3 cups of ACV with the Mother (antimicrobial and antioxidant effects, improves digestion, helps lower blood sugar levels, a great support for your immune system)

If you do not have everything listed, it doesn’t matter, just use what you have! If a particular ingredient doesn’t agree with you, simply omit it and replace with a more palatable alternative. Feel free to personalise the recipe and make your own magical elixir!

Mix all these ingredients with ACV and let it brew in an airtight jar for 4 weeks. Give it a shake every now and then. Strain the lovely goodness into a sterilised bottle or jar.

Have a tablespoon a day. The perfect addition to your daily wellness routine and a great immune booster.

I can not wait to take a shot in the new few weeks – a balance of spicy, sour, sweet, sharp and herbal.

Store in a cool, dark cupboard for up to a year.
