About your host!
My name is Moni - I am an artist, apiarist and alchemist.
Over the past 10 years, my journey with the bees has profoundly shaped my creative process and greatly inspired my botanical creations, allowing me to explore the magical and alchemical potential of beeswax as a powerful, transformative, earth-infused medium. With 15+ years as a designer working for some of the biggest brands, I continue to channel that creativity into crafting fun, whimsical, quirky, colourful candles inspired by nature and made with intention. Beeswax holds a powerful connection to Mother Earth and our pollinator friends and in this candlestick making workshop I hope to share the experience of beeswax alchemy.
Workshop Overview:
Step into the world of BEESWAX CANDLESTICK making, where you’ll not only craft exquisite, eco-friendly candles but also unlock the secrets of beeswax alchemy and delve into the art, science and folklore behind these enchanting creations. You will create:
-
Dipped Taper Candles - A very traditional craft and iconic candle making technique, where you’ll repeatedly dip a wick into melted beeswax to create beautiful, rustic tapers. We will also learn to manipulate the candles into beautiful forms, by bending, braiding and twisting!
-
Rolled Marbled Beeswax Candles: A truly one-of-a-kind technique! You’ll go beyond the usual ‘boring’ pre-made sheets by learning how to actually create, blend colour and texturise your own funky beeswax sheets from scratch. A fun, playful and experimental take on a traditional craft. Finally, you will roll your exquisite, eco-friendly sheets into truly unique candles.
This workshop is a delightful blend of history, creativity, and practical candle-making techniques. Set against the backdrop of our funky, colourful Wax Atelier, which coincidently sits above our honey and wax processing workshop! So we can have a quick tour downstairs too! We keep our group small so expect personalised guidance and plenty of space to let your creativity shine.
NOTE - This hands-on, immersive workshop is designed to take you far beyond the basics of rolling a wick in readymade beeswax sheets (which in my opinion is self-explanatory and people should not be charging for!) We do things different at The Wild Bee Company!
What Will Happen on the Day:
-
Welcome and Introductions
We begin the day with a warm beverage, served with a spoonful of our very own honey. We’ll provide a brief overview of what to expect throughout the day, and you’ll get acquainted with your host (me!), your master Chandler for the day. -
The History of Beeswax
We’ll dive right into the fascinating history and folklore surrounding bees and beeswax candles. Discover how bees make wax and learn why beeswax is considered one of the most magical and eco-friendly materials. -
The Alchemy of Beeswax
We’ll explore properties of various types of beeswax, including its slow burn, cleansing powers, drip-free nature and naturally sweet scent. We’ll also briefly touch on the properties of other types of wax (like soy and paraffin) so you can understand why beeswax truly shines. -
Wicking
We’ll learn about different types of wicks, how to choose the right one for your candle, and how wick size affects your candle’s burn time and quality. -
Filtering + Melting
We will cover the essential skills, tools and equipment to filter and melt beeswax. We will also have a quick tour of our wax and honey processing studio! -
Colouring Beeswax
We will explore how to add colour to your wax by using natural pigments and concentrates.
-
Health + Safety
We will talk about safe candle making practices as we work through the practical session. Keeping your workspace tidy is key to a successful candle-making experience. We’ll show you the best techniques for cleaning beeswax, along with tips on how to beautifully package your candles. Whether you’re gifting them or selling them, presentation matters!
